Macabre? Yes. Sweet? Yes. Truly an insight into the human condition.
“I think when you put them in the (ground), that’s goodbye, goodbye,” Stevens said. “In this way I could touch her and look at her and talk to her.”
She kept her sister, who was dressed in her “best housecoat,” on an old couch in a spare room off the bedroom. Jean sprayed her with expensive perfume that was June’s favorite.
“I’d go in, and I’d talk, and I’d forget,” Stevens said. “I put glasses on her. When I put the glasses on, it made all the difference in the world. I would fix her up. I’d fix her face up all the time.”
She offered a similar rationale for keeping her husband on a couch in the detached garage. James, who had been laid to rest in a nearby cemetery, wore a dark suit, white shirt and blue knitted tie.
“I could see him, I could look at him, I could touch him. Now, some people have a terrible feeling, they say, ‘Why do you want to look at a dead person? Oh my gracious,’” she said.
“Well, I felt differently about death.”
I admit, I struggle with actions like this.
This Supreme Court ruling is binding on all states and local governments, and immediately renders some of Wisconsin’s current laws unconstitutional. Therefore, in keeping with my oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, I hereby declare that this office will no longer accept law enforcement referrals for violations of the following statutes:
Section 167.31, prohibiting uncased or loaded firearms in vehicles;
Section 941.23, prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons, including firearms;
Section 941.235, prohibiting the possession of firearms in public buildings;
Section 941.237, prohibiting the possession of firearms in establishments where alcohol
may be sold or served; and,
Section 941.24, prohibiting the possession of knives that open with a button, or by
gravity, or thrust, or movement.All of these statutes constitute unjustifiable infringements on the fundamental right of every law-abiding American to arm themselves for self-defense and the defense of their loved ones, co-workers, homes and communities. This change also invalidates Jackson County Ordinance Sections 9.01 (firearms in public buildings) and 9.29 (CCW).
On the one hand, the D.A. should prosecute the laws as written until told otherwise. He is an instrument of enforcement and not a legislative body. On the other hand, it is his duty to uphold the Constitution and he has a higher obligation to the people of his county to act within their rights. The Supreme Court was rather clear on this issue and he is duty bound to act accordingly even if the state legislature hasn’t caught up yet.
Such is the push and pull of protecting our rights.
This one may be a little difficult. Maybe not. It’s chief signifigance is cultural. I even included a measurement for you for scale. You’re welcome.
UPDATE: Congrats to BVBigBro. I guess this one wasn’t too difficult (no offense).
This is Henderson Island. The crew of the whaleship Essex landed here for a week after their ship was sunk by an extraordinarily large Sperm Whale. Three men stayed for months until finally rescued. The other survivors resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. The plight of the Essex inspired Herman Melville as he wrote his signature tome, Moby Dick.
This is an absolute disgrace.
In a far-reaching restatement of goals for the nation’s space agency, NASA administrator Charles Bolden says President Obama has ordered him to pursue three new objectives: to “re-inspire children” to study science and math, to “expand our international relationships,” and to “reach out to the Muslim world.” Of those three goals, Bolden said in a recent interview with al-Jazeera, the mission to reach out to Muslims is “perhaps foremost,” because it will help Islamic nations “feel good” about their scientific accomplishments.
In the same interview, Bolden also said the United States, which first sent men to the moon in 1969, is no longer capable of reaching beyond low earth orbit without help from other nations.
What the hell?
Hat tip Wizbang.

Oops… they tried to be nice and ended up letting a terrorist out of prison for what could be more than a decade.
The cancer expert who predicted the Lockerbie bomber would die within three months of his release from prison has admitted he could live for another ten years or more.
Professor Karol Sikora, who had diagnosed Abdelbaset Al Megrahi with terminal cancer, faced calls to apologise to victims’ families last night.
Campaigners reacted with fury to the professor’s comments, which they said raised new questions about the decision to allow Megrahi to return to his native Libya.
Let’s just hope that nobody gets killed because of this.
This story provides an interesting view inside the mind of the AP reporter and editors.
Adviser Daniel Patrick Moynihan, notable as a Democrat in the administration, urged the administration to initiate a worldwide system of monitoring carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, decades before the issue of global warming came to the public’s attention.
OK, that’s interesting as a little footnote, but don’t you think there might me some interesting stories of more historical relevance in this?
The documents also include about 5,000 pages of now unclassified national security records on the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, correspondence between Nixon and then-British Prime Minister Edward Heath and back-channel Soviet-Israeli relations.
Nah… who wants to do any heavy lifting? Who cares about America’s involvement in the Arab-Israeli War? It’s more fun to talk about Global Warming.
